It is no secret...I am celebrating my 40th birthday tomorrow and couldn't be more thrilled about it. Even before it has officially arrived, I have already enjoyed my 40s so much more than my 20s and 30s. The angst is already so much less....
My sweet mama is visiting to celebrate my fabulous week ... my birthday, first book signing, first knitting class and then the kiddos start school on Wednesday, a week from today. It is a big 10 days in the Haesemeyer household, indeed.
Dan asked, "Have we gotten you a birthday present yet?" When I said, "no, but I have the perfect one in mind," Mom, Kate and I pounced on these:

Funky Knit Patent is the official Dansko name of these beauties. I almost fell off my chair when I saw them online.

The pic is of a single ply, and it looks like a Manos or Malabrigo to me. It is mostly stockinette stitch with a couple of purls thrown in there for good measure.
It really has been birthday week as a friend took my mom, Kate and I out for dinner last night and here is how my flourless chocolate cake showed up at our table:

Another fancy! I am a peanut butter/chocolate fanatic and the cake had the most incredible peanut butter frosting that is the stripe underneath the cake in the pic.
The Multi-Cabled Bag is first up in my class schedule. It is worked in a medium weight yarn at 5 stitches per inch and requires 552 yards. Purl Yarn Boutique is offering a two session class September 8th and 22nd from 10-noon.

I worked the sample for Purl in one of my favorite yarns, Berroco's Ultra Alpaca:

This is the irresistible color, Prune Mix #6284. If you look closely you can see many, many colors jumping around in the yarn.

The lining is prequilted fabric that is begins as one long strip that is foled in half and seamed. Plastic canvas is cut into a 13" square and slid into the fabric pocket, then seamed shut.
Here is the lining:

The colors can be seen a bit more in this pic with the lining:

A three session class at Wild Purls is October 27th, November 10th and 17th from 10-noon. For the Wild Purls sample, I worked it in Cascade Yarn's 220 Superwash in color Baby Denim #897:

And here is the floral fabric I could not live without for the lining:

Next up is the Starter Cable Hat & Scarf:

I will be teaching a two session class September 15th and September 29th from 10-noon at Wild Purls. For the sample, I had the privilege of working with Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted in one of their new colorways, Waistcoat:

I used two strands held as one for both the hat and scarf.

The scarf in the book is 60". Two hanks were used for these samples but only 55" for the scarf and the adult hat. If you need those last 5", you'll need another hank. This yarn is heavenly -- so soft and even a bit of shine.
For the sample at Purl Yarn Boutique, I used my favorite superwash wool, Berroco's Vintage Chunky in the color Chana Del #6192.

Colors are flying around in this yarn too, so are we surprised I chose this one? No, not really, I know.
A reminder that the TNNA party and my book signing is Friday, August 17th, at 6pm. I so enjoyed it last year, learning all that is new in yarn-land. Some fun!
More classes and samples coming soon.
If you need an excuse to eat cake tomorrow, just say you need to celebrate my birthday. Totally legal. Knit on!
